3 Ways To Help Treat Your Mental Illness

Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. There are a lot of people out there who have their own mental health issues. If you are one of those people and you are looking for help, there are different ways that you can get the help that you need.

Medication

One way you can go is medication. There are a variety of medications that can help with mental illness. For example, there are mood stabilizers that can help with things like bipolar disorder or depression. In order to get medication, you have to see a medical doctor. In this case, it's a psychiatrist or your primary care physician. Seeing a psychiatrist is probably going to be your best choice, especially when you are trying to find the right medication or if you haven't gotten a diagnosis yet. The reason to see a psychiatrist to begin with is that they can make sure that your diagnosis is correct, and they will have the most up-to-date information on the medications that can help you. Once you have a good diagnosis and you are stable on your medication, you can change to a primary care physician.

Counseling

Talk therapy or counseling has been shown to help people who are dealing with mental illnesses. There are different kinds of talk therapy, including things like cognitive behavioral therapy. These kinds of therapy will help you learn new ways of coping with your issues and will teach you to be healthier and let you get on with your life better. Your therapist may be a psychologist, or they could be a social worker who has been trained in mental health issues.

Combination

Some people do well with just medication, some with just counseling, but many people need to have both. If you go with both, you may have two different providers, one for therapy who you will see on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, and then another for med management. The person you see for med management may only see you once a month unless you are adjusting or trying new medications out, when they may want to see you more often.

If you have mental health issues, there is help out there. You can get the help that you need to control your life. There are different ways that you can choose from, and it may take you some time to find exactly what will work best for you.
